Origins of Farmworker Appreciation Day

Farmworker Appreciation Day has deep roots in the labor movements of the 1960s in the United States. It started with Filipino farmworkers in California who fed up with low wages and poor working conditions, and organized strikes that led to the creation of the United Farm Workers (UFW) union. Their efforts, in collaboration with various unions and agricultural groups, brought significant improvements to the lives of farm laborers.

In 1994, U.S. President Bill Clinton officially designated August 6th as Farmworker Appreciation Day, recognizing the vital contributions of farmworkers to food production.
