The VALPRO Path project was showcased on June 25th, 2025, at the Teagasc Crops and Technology Open Day, held in partnership with the Irish Farmers Journal. The event brought together thousands of farmers, researchers, agri-food stakeholders and policymakers to explore cutting-edge developments in crop and tillage innovation.
Minister Heydon’s Visit and VALPRO Products Showcase
Minister Martin Heydon TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, attended the event and chaired the Food Vision 2030 Tillage Group meeting during the day, underscoring the Irish Government’s commitment to sustainable and resilient agri-food systems.
The VALPRO Path project was presented to the Minister by Teagasc researchers and project partners Sheila Alves, Mark Fenelon, Eimear Gallagher, Richard Lynch, and Amy O’Leary. The team showcased a dedicated poster and a selection of innovative bakery products developed through the project, which drew strong interest from farmers, state agencies, and other stakeholders attending the event.
50+ Demonstrations Put Spotlight on Sustainability and Technology
The Open Day featured over 50 field demonstrations and interactive exhibits, highlighting the latest research on tillage and horticultural crops. With a strong emphasis on sustainability, the event included demonstrations of advanced machinery, such as GPS-guided sprayers, drone-assisted spot spraying and non-chemical potato haulm destruction techniques using electrical systems.
VALPRO Path’s contribution sparked valuable discussions around value-added uses for legumes, low-input sustainable farming and the development of high-value food products that align with Ireland’s climate and biodiversity targets.
Looking Ahead: Building on VALPRO Path’s Momentum
The Open Day offered national exposure and a platform for dialogue, allowing the VALPRO Path team to connect directly with farmers, policymakers and agri-food stakeholders. The presence of Minister Heydon further underscored the project’s alignment with Ireland’s agricultural priorities, particularly its focus on innovation, sustainability and value creation from underused crops.
As Ireland moves toward more climate-resilient and biodiversity-friendly food systems, VALPRO Path continues to demonstrate how research can drive real-world change. The project will now build on this momentum through upcoming demonstrations, product development and deeper engagement with industry and policy stakeholders.
