The growing demand for plant protein in Europe presents both opportunities and challenges. While the plant protein value chain offers promising potential, there are significant gaps that hinder its full development. The VALPRO Path project conducted a gap analysis to identify these issues and propose targeted solutions to strengthen the EU’s plant protein sector.

The Problem : Gaps in the EU Plant Protein Value Chain

Despite the increasing popularity of plant-based proteins, the EU plant protein value chain faces several barriers. These include insufficient infrastructure for processing plant proteins, limited research into certain protein-rich crops, and inadequate collaboration among stakeholders. These gaps prevent the full utilization of the EU’s potential to become a leading producer of sustainable plant protein.

The Solution

Through a detailed gap analysis, the VALPRO Path project coordinator- Teagasc, has identified key areas where improvements can be made. The analysis provides insights into how the EU can enhance its plant protein value chain by focusing on expanding research, fostering collaborations between industry and research institutions, and improving infrastructure. These steps are essential to building a competitive and sustainable plant protein sector in Europe.

Benefits

Addressing these gaps will lead to several benefits, including increased production capacity, greater market competitiveness, and enhanced sustainability within the plant protein sector. Improved collaboration and infrastructure development will empower farmers and businesses to meet the growing consumer demand for plant-based protein, while also aligning with EU sustainability goals.
